AFP AK Chapter Lunch & Learn - Securities, Tangible Personal Property, Real Estate, & Business Exit

When:  Oct 20, 2021 from 11:45 AM to 01:00 PM (AKT)
Associated with  AFP, Alaska Chapter

Securities, Tangible Personal Property, Real Estate, & Business Exit Planning, Oh My! with Harry Need, CFRE & Karl Kaufman, JD

Planned gifts usually come from wealth rather than income, but they aren't always deferred. If you want to identify, discuss, and accept donations from somewhere other than a checking account or a DAF, you need to be conversational in the opportunities inherent in appreciated assets. Spend an hour getting a little more comfortable with these incredible opportunities to deliver value to your donors and get ready for the next one.

Harry W. Need, MPA, CFRE

Harry is an exhausted father of a two y.o., a volunteer rabble-rouser, a VW van knuckle banger, ski patroller, and an aspiring fly-fishing guru. Also, UA pays him to help potential benefactors and their professional advisors discover and develop values and priorities into gifts of significance.

In addition to working with donors, as Senior Director of Philanthropic Services for the UA Foundation, Harry also helps promote and elevate effective and ethical donor-centric fundraising practices in the social sector through his leadership role as President of the Anchorage Estate Planning Council and his past presidency of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Alaska Chapter.

He's been working with complex gifts and gifts of significance for UA for over a decade and is typically focusing on guiding 10-15 donors and their representatives to $5-20m of giving each year in the "University for Alaska" campaign. A focus on gifts of significance requires prioritization, an integrated team approach on gifts of six and seven figures, and an eagle-eye for the opportunities presented by gifts of appreciated assets.

Karl A. Kaufman, JD, LLM

Raised in Alaska, Karl enjoys the state’s outdoor opportunities with his family.  Together, they enjoy winter sports and cycling. Until law school, he worked on the Alaska Railroad and commercial fished the Yukon River.

He entered private practice in 2010 in Portland, Oregon, after receiving his LL.M. in taxation from New York University.  Before attending NYU, Karl clerked on the Oregon Court of Appeals. Karl’s practice emphasizes tax-exempt organizations, tax planning and advice, wills, trusts and probate administration, and Alaska Native law.

Karl also volunteers with a variety of charitable organizations, including the Anchorage Library Foundation and the Alaska Community Foundation. Karl is a past president of the Anchorage Estate Planning Council, and he is a frequent speaker on federal and state tax issues, estate planning and probate, and other topics.

Cost is $10 for AFP members and $15 for non-members.
