Women Give 2018: Tracking the Intergenerational Generosity Gene

How Do Parents Transmit Philanthropy to Daughters & Sons?

Facilitator: Loki Gale Tobin

In recent decades, women’s visibility as leaders and decision-makers in society has risen. A growing body of research indicates gender matters in philanthropy across a person’s life cycle. When viewed from the lens of the continuing intergenerational transfer of wealth’s potential to increase charitable giving, preparation of the next generation is vital to philanthropy.

The report, Transmitting Generosity to Daughters and Sons (PDF), examines the role of gender in philanthropy and the influence of parents on their children’s giving.

As fund development professionals, we will discuss how generosity is transmitted from parents to adult children:

  • Does parental wealth affect this dynamic?
  • Does frequency or amount of parental giving have an impact?
  • What are the implications of the findings for how parents pass on philanthropic values?
  • How can these findings impact our philanthropic practice?
