Budgets. Financial statements. Ack! Are you secretly (or openly) afraid of these documents? Do your eyes glaze over when you look at your nonprofit’s financial statements? Does it seem like everyone else in the room understands them better than you? Gain the confidence you need to read and understand these important documents. This session will provide overview of basic accounting concepts as they apply to nonprofit organizations. Content is designed for participants without formal education in accounting and includes real-life examples relatable for nonprofits of all sizes.

This session will equip you with the tools you need to read and understand nonprofit financial statements and develop and understand budgets. Guiding principles from the Standards for Excellence® will be incorporated throughout the presentation to highlight the importance of ethics and accountability in financial management. At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to:

  1. Explain basic accounting concepts
  2. Analyze financial statements
  3. Construct a revenue and expense budget for an organization

Principal, Stephanie Cory Consulting

Stephanie is committed to strengthening the nonprofit sector through education.
Recognized for her excellence in teaching and facilitation, she was named a Certified Trainer by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). Demonstrating her commitment to helping organizations strengthen their governance and employ best practices, Stephanie is a Certified Governance Consultant through BoardSource and a Licensed Consultant through the Standards for Excellence® Institute. Stephanie earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in gerontology from the University of Southern California and an MEd in adult and organizational development from Temple University.

She understands nonprofit management through lens of a manager and consultant as well as a volunteer. Stephanie has more than 30 years’ cumulative experience as a board member. She authored a chapter on boards and fundraising for the second and third editions of The Handbook of Board Governance, which were published by John Wiley & Sons in 2020 and 2024 respectively.
