In order to financially support your organization, donors must trust you. Ethical fundraising is imperative to maintaining both our donors’ and the public’s trust. While some fundraising approaches may be legal, it does not mean they are ethical. Learn how to help your organization and our sector maintain the highest ethical standards in fundraising. Learn the appropriate ways to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors. This session will explore methods for evaluating and resolving common ethical dilemmas in fundraising. Using the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Code of Ethical Conduct, the Donor Bill of Rights, and the Standards for Excellence® as our guides, we will explore the trickiest issues in fundraising ethics and have the opportunity to apply a variety ethical decision-making models to case studies. Learn what an ethical fundraising organization looks like and how to avoid employing fundraising tactics that could tarnish your organization’s reputation and hinder your fundraising efforts.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define ethical fundraising
  • Identify and mitigate potential fundraising conflicts of interest
  • Recognize and common fundraising ethical issues (influence, fund management, use of information/privacy, compensation)
  • Solve ethical dilemmas using a variety of ethical theories and published resources (AFP Code of Ethical Conduct, the Donor Bill of Rights, Standards for Excellence)
