The highly anticipated Meet the Funders event is back and its virtual!

Join us Thursday, June 15 from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM virtually for an engaging discussion with grant makers Charlotte Friedman, Program Officer, Jewish Foundation of Los Angeles, Araceli Salvador-Gonzalez, Family Engagement Coordinator, LA Partnership for Early Childhood Investment, and Nichol T. Whiteman, Chief Executive Officer, Los Angeles Dodger Foundation to discuss how foundation giving at its core is community organizing, how it works to build community, increase participatory grantmaking, and solve problems1.

 

Moderated by Monica Lee Copeland, MFA, CFRE, Chief Philanthropy Officer, Children’s Bureau: you will learn how to identify appropriate funders, create winning Letters of Intent (LOI’s) and award requests, conduct compelling funder meetings and site visits and build effective stewardship practices. This session is geared towards frontline fundraisers in various stages of their careers, nonprofit leaders, staff, and consultants. Approved for 1.5 CEs by CFRE International.

Charlotte Friedman, Jewish Foundation of Los Angeles


As Program Officer at The Foundation’s Center for Designed Philanthropy, Charlotte Friedman manages institutional grant programs focused on the Los Angeles Jewish community, including our flagship Cutting Edge Grants and our newest Reimagine Grants. She also provides philanthropic advising to The Foundation donors who support pressing issues in Jewish Los Angeles and the general community.

Charlotte came to The Foundation from the Downtown Women’s Center, where she helped raise millions of dollars for programs that support and empower women experiencing homelessness. She has worked to advance social and environmental justice throughout her career in positions at the New York Civil Liberties Union, Taproot Foundation, the United Nations Global Pulse, Heal the Bay, and Global Green USA. At The Foundation, Charlotte leverages her experience in fundraising, grantmaking, community organizing, and program development to help nonprofits grow and succeed and to advise donors on impactful giving strategies.

 Charlotte earned her master's in social work with a concentration in community organizing, planning, and administration from the University of Southern California, and her bachelor's degree in women and gender studies and environmental studies from Bates College. She is a Certified 21/64 Philanthropic Advisor.


Araceli Salvador-Gonzalez,
LA Partnership for Early Childhood Investment

Araceli Sandoval-Gonzalez is a mission-driven consultant with expertise in public relations, policy analysis, government affairs, philanthropic fund management, and grant-writing. She has two decades of experience championing education and social justice issues at the local, state, and national levels. Her tenacity and keen ability to cultivate relationships have resulted in several local and state budgetary and policy wins for early care and education, transitional kindergarten, expanded TK, teacher professional development, and maternal mental health. Araceli began her career working for the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, California Association for Bilingual Education, and Early Edge California.

Araceli currently serves on the LAUSD Facilities Bond Oversight Committee as an executive member is the Board Chairwoman for East Los Angeles Community Corp (ELACC), an affordable housing non-profit, and is also a board member for Latinas Lead California. She earned dual bachelor’s degrees at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Master’s in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge.


Nichol T. Whiteman, Chief Executive Officer from the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation

With a relentless dedication to improving the lives of others, Nichol Whiteman is the Chief Executive Officer of the award-winning Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF). Under Nichol’s leadership, LADF tackles the most pressing problems facing Los Angeles with a mission to improve education, health care, homelessness and social justice for all Angelenos.

During Nichol’s tenure, LADF launched incredibly impactful programming including Dodgers Dreamteam (formerly Dodgers RBI), a youth development initiative serving more than 12,000 youth today.

As part of LADF’s commitment to Southern California communities, the Foundation completed its 50th Dodgers Dreamfield, created a benefit gala, and increased fundraising by 1,000% with Nichol at the helm. Direct programming is only the beginning. Whiteman also advocates for LADF to be a strong charitable partner for nonprofits within the Los Angeles community through strategic grant making that builds capacity and reach. Collectively, Whiteman has cultivated partnerships that have resulted in more than $40 million in community investment in the form of direct programs and grant making, impacting over 2.3 million children.

With a degree in Economics from Spelman College, Nichol was the first in her family to graduate from college and has a passion for education, equity, and diversity. Her unwavering dedication resulted in positions in investment management and publishing before beginning a philanthropic career as VP, Western Region of the Jackie Robinson Foundation. As a Black woman in Major League Baseball, Nichol understands the importance of access. She uses her resources to open doors and opportunities for youth from all backgrounds. In addition to her professional achievements, she mentors countless men and women. With a mighty team that shares her commitment to advocacy, Whiteman aims to deepen the impact of LADF programs and enhance the Foundation’s visibility and philanthropic influence across Los Angeles. Appointed to the State of California’s Commission on the Status of women and Girls, Nichol now extends her impact beyond Los Angeles as she fights for the opportunities and support that all communities deserve.

ML has raised over $250 million for nonprofit institutions and billions for private equity investment. Previously, she served as the Chief Development Officer for Planned Parenthood Pasadena and The Cerritos College Foundation where she successfully raised $10 MM for the Finish Great capital campaign. As the CEO of MLC & Company, she led philanthropic initiatives for Pasadena POPS Orchestra, KidSave International, and Agape Spiritual Center. She continues to provide NGO strategic planning expertise as Senior Counsel for Netzel Grisby Associates. ML has significant private sector business development experience, formerly serving as the Chief Marketing Officer for Stone Ally, LLC and Clarke Financial Group, as well as a Senior Marketing Director for Transamerica Life Insurance and Retirement Services where she was responsible for a $1.6 billion brand. A proud adoptive mother, she is deeply committed to protecting vulnerable children and families. She is a current Board Director of the Foothills Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma and volunteers for two arts organizations.
