Engaging the Next Generation of Charitable Sector Leaders
The charitable sector often finds itself struggling to find and retain talented team members. Non-profit leaders must work to nurture, mentor and develop the professionals needed to ensure the mission of our organizations can be accomplished. Within our region, efforts have been underway to introduce and expose emerging philanthropists to the fundamental principles in how the sector operates. Join us as Dr. Don Simmons, former Co-Director of the Humanics Certificate Program at CSU, Fresno, shares how this program seeks to prepare future sector leaders, along with how we can work collaboratively to strengthen the pipeline of talented, knowledgeable and capable individuals.
Don will share about the program curriculum, including service learning requirements, opportunities to partner with our Community Based Organizations (CBO) and discuss how the university is seeking to prepare CBO leaders.

Don R. Simmons, Ph.D. (www.creativepotentialconsulting.org)
Don Simmons holds a B.S. and M.A. in education, and M.P. A. and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Texas A&M University. He did post-doctoral studies at the University of San Francisco and Yale University’s Program on Nonprofit Organizations, where he specialized in organizational governance and generosity.
Dr. Simmons is a national consultant with Community Benefit Organizations, specializing in Volunteer Leadership, Board Engagement and Transformational Philanthropy. He is Co-Director and Distinguished Lecturer in Humanics at California State University, Fresno.
Previously, Dr. Simmons served as Associate Professor of Business at Biola University and Director of the Center for Volunteerism and Community Service at Occidental College. He was Director of Continuing Professional Development and Associate Professor of Education at Golden Gate Theological Seminary. He is the author of hundreds of articles and monographs on volunteer engagement and community leadership. Dr. Simmons served as a member of the board of the International Association of Volunteer Administrators, the Volunteer Centers of Orange County, La Mirada, Fresno and Marin County. He currently serves as a board member of the Arte' Americas, MADventure Foundation and is an advisor to the Whitney Trust. For the past 15 years, he has served on the City of Fresno's Historic Preservation Commission. A certified BoardSource trainer and consultant, Don’s focus is working with organizations and communities which might ordinarily fall through the cracks. A native of South Carolina, he enjoys historic preservation, neighborhood organizing and spending time pretending to garden, but mostly hanging out with his rescued dog & cat.
Humanics@FresnoState transforms lives and perspectives on leadership & philanthropy and engenders Exceptional Leaders, Enhanced Organizations, & Enriched Communities by:
1) Investing thousands of dollars in Community Benefit Organizations (CBOs) serving the region;
2) Partnering with CBOs to strengthen capacity and foster sustainability; and
3) Preparing leaders for service to humanity through CBOs as administrators and executives, board members and volunteers, and program staff.
Humanics offers students specialized training in administration and leadership for community benefit organizations (CBOs) and works with hundreds of CBOs in the region to prepare leaders for service to humanity.
Humanics at Fresno State was originally affiliated with Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (formerly American Humanics, Inc.), a national alliance of universities and nonprofits dedicated to educating and certifying individuals to strengthen and lead CBOs.
