Adapting Development Plans In Times of Crisis

Presented by Dr. George Boodrookas, Amber Flores and Melissa Van Diepen

Join us May 7, 2020 to learn about how to change the tone of social media messaging and donor calls to canceling annual events, three local development professionals from the art, education, and medical sectors will share how they've adapted their development plans and modified their stewardship efforts to thrive during COVID 19 and quarantine.

Dr. George Boodrookas, Dean of Advancement, Modesto Junior College, Executive Director, Modesto Junior College Foundation

George Boodrookas is Dean of Advancement at Modesto Junior College. He has served as an administrator at MJC since 1989 in various capacities.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Economy from UC Berkeley, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a Doctoral Degree in Education from California State University, Stanislaus.

As the Dean of Advancement, Dr. Boodrookas provides leadership in board development, endowment management, alumni relations, event management, cross-campus fundraising coordination, storytelling/public relations, major gifts and legacy giving.

Dr. Boodrookas serves on the advisory committee for the Center for Community College Advancement with the Council for Advancement in Support of Education (CASE).  He is immediate past-president of the Network for California Community College Foundations Board of Directors, a big fan and past board member of the Yosemite Chapter of AFP, and serves as an ambassador for Modesto Junior College related to several community initiatives and committees. He also is a proud member of the Modesto Rotary Club.


Amber Flores, Director of Development - Foundation & Annual Giving

Amber brings more than ten years of extensive non-profit arts management experience. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Theater from California State University, Stanislaus, she was accepted into a Master’s program at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. While attending graduate school, Amber worked for the Hilberry Theater and Bonstelle Theater. After graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theater Management, she was hired as the Managing Director of the Sonoma County Repertory Theater. By mid-2010, she moved back to Stanislaus County to work for the Gallo Center for the Arts as its Development Manager. In 2016, she was promoted to Director of Development – Foundation & Annual Giving. Currently, she and her team help to raise more than $1.5 million annually. In addition to her work at the Gallo Center for the Arts, she volunteers her time with the California Arts Council as a peer-review panelist. She also serves as the immediate past-president for the local Association of Fundraising Professionals, Yosemite Chapter.

Melissa Van Diepen, Executive Director, Community Hospice Foundation

Melissa Van Diepen is the Executive Director of Community Hospice Foundation. Melissa is a valley girl, growing up in Fresno and a proud graduate of California State University, Fresno (Go Dogs!) She finds fulfillment working for organizations with strong missions of service. She started her career in 1997 at The Modesto Bee and jumped into the non-profit pool in 2011 with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. During her tenure, she grew their signature program, Team In Training by 127% and launched three new endurance training programs. Melissa joined Community Hospice Foundation in 2015 as the Major Gifts Officer where she launched Over the Edge for Community Hospice, CHF’s first fundraising event in Stockton, raising over $169,000 in its inaugural year. She was named Executive Director in 2018. Currently, she is the president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Yosemite Chapter. She lives in Modesto with her husband Doug and two daughters, Abby, a senior at Downey High School and future UCLA Bruin and Maddie, a sophomore.
