Should You Accept a Tobacco Company Gift? (And other fundraising ethical dilemmas)

When:  Apr 8, 2019 from 11:45 AM to 01:00 PM (CT)
Associated with  AFP Central Iowa Chapter
It’s been said that fundraisers ‘just need to do the right thing’. But how do you decide what ‘the right thing’ really is? The subject of fundraising ethics is dangerously under thought, incomplete and inadequate. Roger Craver says, "We ignore the serious attention and development of universal ethical standards at our own peril. Restoring the trust of the public, our donors, our beneficiaries, the politicians and regulators depends on our getting serious, thoughtful and practical."

Drawing upon the recent work by Rogare, the international fundraising think tank, Cherian Koshy will lead a discussion on ethical decision-making frameworks  – that goes well beyond deciding whether something is compliant with the code – and will get attendees to use it to work through a series of fundraising ethical dilemmas in small groups.

Attendees will also:
  • Identify different normative approaches to fundraising ethics.
  • Apply these approaches to actual ethical dilemmas in fundraising using a decision-making framework that goes beyond deciding whether something is compliant with the code.
  • Make better ethical justifications for the actions they choose to take or choose not to take, to the media, board, donors and other stakeholders.
