Description

In this presentation, two experienced gift planners will examine ethical tools that can help guide our decisions as fundraisers.  We will review Iowa’s standards for mental capacity and laws around elder abuse and financial abuse.  Through several interactive case studies, we will apply these tools and concepts to explore how to approach situations professionally and compassionately.

Kelly Allen is Senior Director of Development in the office of gift planning at Iowa State University Foundation. With many years of fundraising experience, she can talk ad nauseam about annual appeals, prospect research, special events, donor cultivation and stewardship, major gifts and more.  However, she has spent the past fifteen years pursuing her passion of helping donors achieve their philanthropic dreams through gift planning. Kelly has been active in, and benefited from professional associations, such as National Association of Charitable Gift Planners, Mid Iowa Planned Giving Council, Eastern Iowa Planned Giving Council, Minnesota Planned Giving Council, Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement.  She holds the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation from CFRE International and the Fellow in Charitable Estate Planning (FCEP) designation from the Charitable Estate Planning Institute.  She has also served on the board of and volunteered for other nonprofits as well.

Joe Nolte is Senior Director of Development in the office of gift planning at Iowa State University Foundation.  In this position, he serves as a resource for alumni and friends of Iowa State University to incorporate philanthropy as a part of their personal planning goals. Recently, he has launched the Foundation’s efforts to engage international alumni in philanthropy at Iowa State. Joe has nearly 25 years of nonprofit work experience, mostly in eastern and central Iowa.  He is Past President of the Mid Iowa Planned Giving Council, and holds the Certified Gift Planning Professional certification from Crescendo GiftCollege.  He volunteers for a number of local, national, and international nonprofit organizations, including serving as the Chair of the Resource Development Committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He holds a BA from Mount Mercy College, a masters of business leadership from William Penn University, and a masters of arts in global affairs from the University of Oklahoma.  He lives in Des Moines with his wife, Joanne, and son, Eddie.
