Despite recent record highs in total volunteer hours (peaking at 8.7 billion hours in 2014) and total charitable dollars (peaking at $410.02 billion in 2017) given to nonprofit organizations, recent studies by the University of Maryland's Do Good Institute (DGI) and the Indiana University's Lilly Family School of Philanthropy show that the United States has experienced a significant decline in the percentage of Americans who volunteer and give annually.
What's causing this dramatic shift in donors and volunteers? What can nonprofits do to either adapt to this new normal or change their own donor and volunteer engagement to course correct this decline?
Join Barbara O'Reilly for an in-depth discussion with Nathan Dietz, Robert F. Grimm and Rosie Allen Herring into the research findings including socio-demographic changes that have contributed to the historic drops in giving and volunteering, including young adults' and retirement-age adults' changing life choices, the decline in religiosity among Americans, and changes in the nonprofit sector. We will then translate these findings into actionable steps nonprofits can take to do their part to reverse this downward trend.
- Understand what socio-demographic changes have contributed to the historic drops in giving and volunteering, including young adults' and retirement-age adults' changing life choices, the decline in religiosity among Americans, and changes in the nonprofit sector.
- Better understand the implications of not reversing the decline in charitable giving and volunteering for the near and long term.
- Develop actionable ideas that nonprofits can implement in engage more donors and volunteers at their own organization.
