Cross-Cultural Communication: Managing Up and Down

This virtual interactive 90-minute workshop will engage participants in exploring how their own cultural influences affect their interactions with clients and colleagues who may operate under different cultural norms. Participants will also identify how implicit bias and common cultural variables affect cross-cultural interactions and learn tools for identifying and effectively responding to cultural miscommunications.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Enhance awareness of how one’s own cultural influences affect interactions with clients and colleagues from other cultures
• Explain how cultural influences contribute to implicit bias
• Describe how to use cultural assessment and intervention tools to develop more effective responses to cultural differences

Sally Jue, MSW

As a coach, facilitator, and trainer for over twenty-five years, Sally has worked with managers and senior leaders from a variety of industries (tech, healthcare, manufacturing, utilities, pharmaceutical, financial, consumer products and hospitality) and with nonprofit and government funded organizations’ leaders, service providers and volunteers. A key focus of her work is facilitating the alignment of her clients’ personal and workplace values, goals and behaviors and assisting organizations in strategically meeting the needs of the increasingly diverse markets and communities they serve. She is nationally known for creating engaging learning sessions and discussions that foster deeper reflection and meaningful dialogue to mitigate implicit bias, create more inclusive work environments, promote social equity and enhance collaborative partnerships.

Prior to becoming a consultant and at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, Sally was the seventh employee at AIDS Project Los Angeles and after nearly ten years there, participated in the organization’s growth to 120 employees and over 200 volunteers. During her tenure she started and ran one of the first mental health programs for people living with AIDS, managed multiple volunteer programs and engaged in community organizing and policy advocacy activities to provide greater access to care and services for people living with AIDS. She was also a diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) consultant/trainer for Sodexo, an executive coach at KornFerry, and has publications on cross cultural counseling and cultural considerations in ethical decision-making.

Sally is currently a consultant with Cook Ross, a Senior Associate with the Aspire Group, and a faculty member for the Southern California Leadership Network.
