Hear from two of Hawaii’s top Human Resources and Organizational Development leaders, Sarah Guay and Ku’ulani Keohokalole, who know how to cultivate the “humanness" in human resources. Strategic planning, change management, and conflict resolution are all critical to ensure sustainable, long-term organizational success. But, you can’t overlook that high levels of engagement are going to drive productivity and lead you to success in the New Year!

Sarah Guay, VP, Human Resources, HEMIC


Sarah Guay is a passionate HR executive with experience leading people and culture functions in some of Hawaii’s Best Places to Work. 

Sarah currently serves as the Vice President of Human Resources at HEMIC, the state’s largest provider of Workman’s Compensation services. Prior to her role at HEMIC, Sarah served as Senior Vice President of Organizational Development at American Savings Bank (ASB), where she led the change management and teammate readiness strategies related to the construction of ASB’s new campus in downtown Honolulu. Sarah also led culture-based development initiatives at ProService and Hawaii Job Corps Center.

Sarah’s passion for authentic and purposeful leadership drive her to serve on several non-profit boards including the Institute for Human Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii and the Oahu Economic Development Board. She is a recent graduate of the Patsy T. Mink Leadership Alliance and serves on the faculty of the Global Institute for Leadership Development.

Sarah earned a Master’s Degree in Organizational Communication from Washington State University in her home state of Washington. Following graduate school she moved to Portland, OR and relocated to Hawaii in 2006. Sarah enjoys reading, gardening, watching college sports and spending time outdoors in Kailua, where she lives with her husband and three children (Henry, Zoey and Griffin).

Ku‘ulani M. Keohokalole, M.A.

Founder of People Strategies Hawai’i, LLC, Ku‘ulani is an experienced organizational development consultant, working in public, non-profit, and for-profit sectors, advising organizations on how to create functional, healthy, and engaging workplaces. She has demonstrated experience consulting leaders on real-time problems. Ku’ulani is also a skilled training content creator, presenter and facilitator. 

Born and raised in Kaneohe, Hawai’i, Ku’ulani blends both her unique understanding of Hawai’i’s cultural context, history and place with her knowledge and experience in organizational development to help organizations achieve their goals. She brings a decade of experience in community and stakeholder engagement and advocacy work across the State of Hawai’i and in New York City. Her passion for improving the lives of individuals and strengthening organizations stems from being raised by a family of Native Hawaiian social workers with a strong belief in the ability of communities to advocate for and solve their own problems. Her mission is to strengthen the capacity of individuals, organizations and communities for a better Hawai’i.
