The Feral World of Gift Acceptance: "Tails" from the Wild Kingdom

This session will review the Model Standards of Practice of the Charitable Gift Planner, sharing specific examples of gift acceptance that are considered too "wild", i.e. unethical, illegal and/or bad fundraising practice.  Learning objectives include:

  • enhance awareness of the recommendation of the Model Standards of Practice of the Charitable Gift Planner,
  • improve knowledge of the legal requirements for fundraising and gift planning, and
  • expand understanding of best practices for fundraising and gift acceptance policies and procedures.

This interactive session will allow time for questions and discussion.


Phil Purcell
currently serves as Senior Counsel for Philanthropy on behalf of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students where he assists fifteen major gift officers engaged in a $250 million campaign including a $100 million goal for planned giving.  Formerly, he served as Vice-President for Planned Giving and Endowment Stewardship at the Ball State University Foundation.

Phil teaches courses on law and philanthropy, nonprofit organization law and planned giving as adjunct faculty for the Indiana University Maurer School of Law (Bloomington, IN) and Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and Fundraising School (Indianapolis, IN).

He currently serves on the board of directors of the American Council on Gift Annuities. Phil formerly served on the board of directors for the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners, Charitable Gift Planners of Indiana (past president), and the Association of Fundraising Professionals Indiana Chapter (past president).

Phil received his B.A. degree from Wabash College (magna cum laude) and his J.D. and M.P.A. degrees (with honors) from Indiana University and he is also a Certified Fundraising Professional.

Ed Sandifer serves as the Planned and Major Gifts Officer for the Indianapolis Zoo, joining the Zoo in 2002.  Ed began his service in philanthropy in 1999, serving as the first Director of Planned Giving at Marian College (now Marian University) in Indianapolis, while concurrently serving as Assistant Counsel to the Indiana State Senate.  Before entering the not-for-profit arena, Ed worked in the private practice of law focusing on estate planning, probate, real estate, and family law matters.

Ed currently serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners.  He is a member and former president of the Charitable Gift Planners of Indiana, and he is also a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Indiana Chapter.  Ed received his B.A. from Indiana University and his J.D. from Indiana University McKinney School of Law.
