National Philanthropy Day (NPD) acknowledges the entire spectrum of services provided by the nonprofit community and recognizes the profound impact that philanthropy has on the fabric of society. Each year the Association of Fundraising Professionals honors individuals and groups who, through their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy, their communities, and the world.

2022 AFP National Philanthropy Day Legacy Awardee-Rev. Dr. Jerry Askew


Jerry AskewThe Rev. Dr. Jerry Askew is Archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee and serves on the clergy staff at St. John’s Cathedral in Knoxville.  He is also interim CEO of the Knoxville Education Foundation.

Since arriving in Knoxville in 1985, Jerry has served as the Dean of Students and Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Affairs at the University of Tennessee; President & CEO of the East Tennessee Foundation; Senior Vice President of St. Mary’s Health System; and, most recently, as President of the Alliance for Better Nonprofits. 

Jerry has served on the Boards of over 50 nonprofit organizations at the local, state and national levels. He currently serves as Chair of the Knoxville Utilities Board and the Episcopal School of Knoxville. 

Jerry received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a Morehead Scholar, M.S. from the University of Memphis, and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.  He completed further theological studies at the University of the South.

Jerry is married to attorney Robyn Jarvis Askew. The Askews have two married children and four delightful grandchildren.
