In a recent blog by Michael Rosen, CFRE published by the Fundraising Authority, he lists 20 facts about Planned Giving taken from his book entitled, “Donor Centered Planned Gift Marketing”. Among the facts there are some surprising revelations.
1. Almost everyone has the ability to make a planned gift.
2. The average age of someone who makes their first charitable bequest commitment is 40–50.
3. Only 5.3% of those over age 50 have made a charitable bequest commitment.
4. Among those over 30, only 22% have been asked for a planned gift.
5. 33% of Americans are willing to consider a charitable bequest.

These statistics indicate a large pool of potential planned givers. It is likely, that at least some of these prospects may already be in our databases and participating through annual giving programs. The question then is how do we identify and cultivate these prospects to convert them to planned givers?

To help us answer this question we are pleased to welcome Regina Beckman, Trust Professional with Glenview Trust (GT). Before joining GT, Regina served as the Director of Gift Planning for the Community Foundation of Louisville. She also is a member of the Louisville Bar Association and has practiced business and estate planning law.

Joining Regina is Len Moisan, President and Founder of The Covenant Group. Before starting his own fundraising consulting firm, Len served as the Vice President for Advancement at two universities, including Bellarmine. He has authored a book called Leadership is a Covenant and has served on the boards of multiple local charities.

Together, they will address questions such as:
  • What are some indicators that an individual might be ready to make a planned gift?
  • What motivates a donor to make a planned gift?
  • What are some new, planned giving vehicles of which fundraisers should be informed?
  • What are some smart, cultivation strategies to build bridges with potential planned givers?
  • How can we be good stewards of planned gifts and these donor relationships?
  • What are the biggest opportunities fundraisers miss when it comes to planned giving?
Our hope is that you will leave informed and ready to implement some new strategies.
