We have long lived in a society where people have, to a large extent, been expected to live (and love) within the confines of sexual and gender identities assigned to them at birth. Those who have not conformed to those expectations have faced discrimination, and sometimes violence.

Our society is moving in a direction where sexual and gender identities, orientations, and expressions are included, valued, celebrated and recognized as a crucial part of commitments to promote and maintain dignity, human freedoms, and human rights. In order to truly embrace inclusion of the full spectrum of sexual and gender identities, orientations, and expressions, an understanding of basic concepts is necessary. Concepts like:

Differentiating between Sex Assigned at Birth, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Attraction, and Culture
Recognizing how cissexism/cisnormativity and heterosexism/heteronormativity show up
Creating safe(r) and more inclusive spaces

This session will help to build understanding of these concepts, and provide a place to ask questions you may not have felt comfortable asking.

Since the early 1970’s, Rainbow Resource Centre has been offering support to the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Today that support includes counselling, education, and programming for individuals ranging from children through to 55±. It also supports families, friends, and employers of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. Rainbow Resource Centre's Education Program provides 2SLGBTQ+ and ally education, awareness, and outreach that assists healthcare providers, educators, students, social service, and commercial service providers.
