Reconciliation is not an Indigenous issue; it is a Canadian Issue. Philanthropy is in a unique position to support Canada’s efforts towards reconciliation and to shape a future that is inclusive and representative of the ever-changing community that it supports. We can amplify a new narrative in Canada that is built from an understanding of the residential school system and colonial practices that have created the current settler centered philanthropic systems. Knowing this history is important because it helps us critique existing systems and recognize that what seems natural today is a product of one specific set of choices that were used to build our existing system.

This conversation series will reflect on today’s practices and the role of philanthropic organizations and their capacity to contribute in a meaningful manner to Reconciliation by educating donors in the oncology of the problems/causes that they are trying to solve. The journey of Reconciliation and Philanthropy begins with a new paradigm of Building Relationships based on respect; Engagement in a way that values Indigenous communities as equal partners; Education on Truth and Reconciliation and Impact Investing to build Indigenous peoples’ capacity by providing them the platform to lead their own change.

Ultimately, encouraging donors and their partners to fully listen, relate and show up in new ways that allow Indigenous voices to guide our next steps will transform philanthropy as a true leader in Reconciliation.
