Associated with  AFP MI, Capital Area Chapter
Join AFP-CAC for a special three-part series featuring Simone Joyaux and Tom Ahern! This sequential learning program will dive into topics of how to apply the written and spoken word in your nonprofit organization.

April 6 12-2 p.m.
May 4 12-2 p.m.
June 1 12-2 p.m.

The written word: At each session, Tom will cover an important donor-communications principle. Additionally, he'll professionally critique work you've submitted (see assignments below) using a variety of easy pass/fail tests he's developed. Each critique takes 5 to 15 minutes. All attendees hear every critique. However, time is limited, so not everything will get critiqued. The earlier you submit your work, the more likely it is Tom will choose it.

  • 1st session-April 6: Draft a one-page solicitation letter. What's your simple offer? Why would the potential donor care?
  • 2nd session-May 4: Draft a thank you letter. Assume that you've received a gift that's twice as large as your average gift.
  • 3rd session-June 1: Topic is the donor newsletter. You'll receive your assignment later.
The spoken word: Simone will focus on fundamental concepts such as: donor retention and key elements of a top-notch relationship building program, the role of board members, program staff, and fundraisers in this relationship building work. Subsequent sessions will include:
  • Engaging your donors in your mission
  • Forms of cultivation gatherings and one-on-one meet ups
  • Thank you calls, handwritten thank-you notes, and deeper conversations
  • Donor recognition program and donor surveys
  • The best face-to-face solicitation
  • The pinnacle of donor relationship building
  • Relationship building through fundraising events
