Principles of ethical fundraising: promoting ethical practices; developing a culture of philanthropy; honoring donor intent; donation recordkeeping; communication of impact to and transparency with fundraising boards and committees.

Learning Outcomes: Addressing Key Knowledge Areas of CFRE Domain 6 Tasks, including ethical practices related to donor record maintenance, gift accounting, financial management; methods of recording, receipting, recognizing, and acknowledging gifts; elements of gift acceptance policies and gift agreements; Organizational transparency; ethical principles relevant to cultivating, securing, and accepting gifts; continuing professional development.

Sue has a unique combination of legal, non-profit, and teaching experience. With a BA in Communication and a JD from The University of Akron, and Masters in Nonprofit Administration from John Carroll University, Susan weaves her legal knowledge, and non-profit skills, experience, and passion. Professionally she is an active member of non-profit boards, organizations, and leadership programs, as well as a regular presenter. She maintains her community involvement in several foundations and organizations. Susan brings her passion for non-profits to the area and enjoys collaborating on the unique ways legal resources and tools merge and support nonprofit causes.

-Cristina González Alcalá, Ph.D., Community Investment Officer at Akron Community Foundation

Cristina uses her in-depth knowledge of the nonprofit community to assist Akron Community Foundation's board of directors in awarding and evaluating quality grants. In addition to managing the community foundation's competitive grant cycles, she also cultivates relationships with local nonprofit leaders and encourages collaboration on community initiatives. Her expertise on the needs and resources of Greater Akron helps us connect our fundholders to meaningful funding opportunities in their areas of interest.

-Renee Scherick, CFRE, Major Gift Officer at Akron Community Foundation

Renee Scherick joined the Akron Community Foundation in September 2013. She guides the foundation’s seven Initiative Funds by providing development direction for their major gift and donor stewardship programs.

 Prior to joining Akron Community Foundation, Renee worked as a development coordinator and development manager for the American Cancer Society, where she recruited volunteers, planned fundraising events, and managed internal projects.

 She has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Business Management from Kent State University, Certified Fundraising Executive designation, and is a 21/64 Certified Advisor.

 Renee enjoys running, yoga, hiking, biking, cooking, and sports and activities with her husband and two teenage children.

Renee currently serves on the AFPNEO Board of Directors and as chair for National Philanthropy Day in Akron.
