As nonprofits navigate increasing financial pressures and shifting donor landscapes, many organizations are exploring earned income opportunities to supplement traditional fundraising. But what does it really mean for a nonprofit to generate revenue through programs, services, products, rentals, or other business activities—and what should organizations consider before taking that step?
This professional development session will explore the opportunities, challenges, and strategic considerations surrounding income-generating streams for nonprofits. Panelists will include nonprofit leaders currently utilizing earned income models, researchers studying the evolving role of earned revenue in the sector, and finance and tax professionals who can speak to legal, financial, and operational implications. Participants will discuss mission alignment, organizational capacity, staffing considerations, sustainability, risk, and the balance between earned income and charitable support. Whether your organization is already experimenting with earned revenue or simply exploring possibilities, this session will provide practical insights to help nonprofits think intentionally about diversification and long-term sustainability.
