I think most of us would say 2017 was a difficult one in terms of loss and devastation throughout the world. But as I was looking for inspiration for what to write in this message to you, and knowing I wanted to be uplifting, I came across an article by Charles Kenny for Vox, an American news and opinion website. So I wanted to share, “9 ways the world got a lot better in 2017.” You can find the full article here.
Last year saw:
- Less famine
- Fewer war deaths
- Fewer deaths from natural disasters
- Progress against pestilence
- Greater life expectancy
- More democracy
- Expanded rights for women & sexual minorities
- Fewer people living on $2 a day
- Greener energy
This is all good news, especially because we know most of the ways the world got better was mainly because of generous people, hard-working charities and of course, our professional fundraising colleagues from around the world. I hope you will proudly carry the belief that, “fundraising is a noble profession” with you throughout the year as you work to advance your charity’s mission.
And, please mark your calendars now so you don’t miss any of the AFP-NJ Chapter’s networking luncheons, our Whitley Lecture and our highly-praised annual conference in November. At these events you will be surrounded by innovative fundraisers doing what you are doing, but also doing things you want to know how to do. You will be learning from the best and making extraordinary connections with some truly fantastic people who are very willing to share their ideas, knowledge and experiences.
If you have been considering getting more involved, now is a great time to reach out to me (email@example.com) to start a conversation about the ways to help, from serving on a committee to helping with the conference, for example.
Your chapter board and I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. If you have any input or ideas about how to strengthen our chapter, please let me know!
