Faith and Giving 
 
After Thanksgiving, Americans turn their attention to shopping with Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday as well as holidays such as Hanukkah and Christmas. However, this is also the time for giving. How do donors make decisions about their giving? For the majority of Americans, faith plays a leading role in their desire to give and serve. Please join our panel discussion to learn more about the interplay of faith and philanthropy in these diverse communities.
 
Gail Mandel, is the Director of Philanthropy for the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation. Her primary responsibilities at the foundation include working with prospective donors to help them fulfill their philanthropic goals with both current and legacy giving and directing the LIFE & LEGACY initiative, which OJCF is spearheading in Oregon in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. In addition, Gail directs the foundation's marketing program and oversees the programming for OJCF's Professional Advisors Group. Prior to her association with the foundation, Gail's employment history includes working for Abrams Books, the world-renowned art and illustrated book publisher, in both the editorial and production departments and for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the development office. Gail serves on the boards of the Mittleman Jewish Community Center and Portland Jewish Academy. She holds a M.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from City College, City University of New York and a B.S. in Journalism from Boston University. 
Marva Edwards  is the pastor of the New Life African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Vancouver. She was born in Terre Haute, Ind., one of eight children of Forest and Mary Sallie Trice. She has traveled throughout most of the United States and has spent time in Japan, Guam and Canada. She moved to Vancouver in 1977. Her educational journey has included classes at Clark College and Concordia University in Portland, Ore., where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theology. She studied with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion church to complete the leadership training certificate, which led to her current position as pastor of New Life African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Vancouver.She has served as board chair of Christian education in the AMEZ Church; organized and began the New Life AMEZ Church; served as chief operating officer for the African American Rites of Passage cultural immersion program; served in multiple leadership roles for the Vancouver branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); and has worked with domestic violence perpetrators and volunteered with the YWCA's hate incidents/hate crimes group.

Susan Gallagher, is the Planned Giving Manager at Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary since early 2017.  She has a master's in business administration from the University of Portland with an emphasis in non-profit management.  Her fundraising experience began when she worked as an intern for a non-profit in 1979 and has continued since.  By choice, she has chosen to seek employment at primarily Catholic institutions.  These include Executive Director of the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center Foundation for eight years, Development Director at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for six years,  member (and past President) of St. Ignatius School Endowment board intermittently since 1989, and as the Chair of the Finance Council of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Canby.  
 
Wajdi Said is the Co-Founder/President, Muslim Educational Trust. Since coming from Yemen to the US in 1988, Mr. Said has worked with the Muslim community as well as the larger community to promote a better understanding of Islam. He has been involved in numerous interfaith committees and panels throughout the years. He is one of the founders of the Interfaith Council of Greater Portland, an organization which came together as a result of 9/11, as well as one of the founders of the Arab, Jewish Muslim Dialogue, The Institute for Christian Muslim Understanding, Islamic Social Services of Oregon State, and the Beloved Community Coalition. Mr. Said is a commissioner with the City of Portland New Portlander Policy Commission, and serves on the board of Neighborhood House, Portland State University Middle East Studies Center, and the Arab and Muslim Police Advisory Board. Mr. Said has spoken at countless colleges, high school, organizations and churches, promoting a better understanding of Islam and Muslims. He currently serves as the President of the Muslim Educational Trust, (MET) which he co-founded in 1993.
