  • Gary Bukowski, CFRE featured in "Giving Tomorrow" Magazine

We're thrilled to read Gary's tribute and learn of his passion for the fundraising profession in the current "Giving Tomorrow" publication. This article speaks volumes to how so many of us have come down different paths only to end up in the same line of work aiming to make life better for our  communities. Congratulations! - Kelly Stolar, CFRE and AFP NWPA Chapter President

  • Honoring Judy Lawrence

AFPNWPA has lost a great leader, mentor, and friend. Long-time AFP member, Judy Lawrence passed away on August 6th and we are all a bit shell-shocked. If you were fortunate enough to know Judy, you were lucky enough to be her friend. Her smile and generous doling out of compliments, made an impact.

She was good at what she did, but shared credit and recognized others for their contributions.  She had integrity and an ethical compass that shaped her professional career and everything she did. One of the hundreds of people she mentored said she goes by the fundraising edict of “What would Judy do?” while trying to make tough decisions. If you ever had the opportunity to work through issues with Judy, you can be sure you would receive a thoughtful answer from Judy, laced with questions you had not considered, and ultimately the answers to these questions would lead you to the answer on your own. She was that good.

Judy was named 2005’s AFP Outstanding Fundraising Professional with decades of fundraising experience at the United Way, several colleges, and in recent years, as a consultant for major campaigns. She was instrumental in helping to write the AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising and Capital Campaign Coaching courses offered at Penn State Behrend.  She most recently served as the National Philanthropy Day Selection Committee Chairperson.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) NW PA has been named a 2020 Ten Star Chapter.

Every year, AFP, the largest association of professional fundraisers in the world, honors chapters for achieving goals that align with key objectives in its long-range strategic plan. Chapters receive the Ten Star Award for performing specific activities designed to increase professionalism within fundraising and public awareness of the importance of philanthropy. Just one-third of all AFP chapters are named Ten Star Chapters, so the AFP NW PA  is one of a select group of chapters to earn this honor.

Ten Star Chapters are recognized at the AFP International Conference on Fundraising (ICON). Chapters also earn the privilege of displaying the Ten Star logo on their website, newsletters and stationary.

Criteria for the award are determined by AFP Global Headquarters. A list of several goals is published annually, and chapters must accomplish 10 of these goals during the year and submit a nomination form for verification to be honored.
