Fundraising Ethics - is it really so easy to 'do the right thing'?

It’s often said that fundraisers ‘just need to do the right thing’. But how do you decide what ‘the right thing’ in fundraising really is? And for whom should you do that ‘right’ thing. This session outlines the ethical theory you need to make the best ethical decisions in fundraising, describes an ethical decision-making framework based on that theory, and then invites participants to work through a series of actual fundraising ethical dilemmas.

Ian MacQuillan MInstF (Dip) is the director of the international fundraising think tank Rogare, which he founded in 2014.

He's recognized as a leading thinker on fundraising ethics and one of his main research areas is to develop a new theory of ethics specifically for application to fundraising. Called Rights Balancing Fundraising Ethics, this theory has gained considerable traction in the global fundraising profession. For example, it is taught as part of the syllabus of the Institute of Fundraising's Certificate in Fundraising, incorporated into Scottish self-regulation and forms a central plank of a new narrative for Canadian fundraising.
