Title: Program Planning and Assessment Americorps VISTA Member

Location: Charleston, SC

Duration: 12 months (June 2022 – June 2023)

Reports To: Programs Director

Position Summary
Camp Happy Days has been serving children with cancer in South Carolina for 40 years, through our summer camp and other recreational programs. This year, we hit a new milestone when we moved into a new, larger office space complete with a yard, activity room, multipurpose space, and family lounge that will allow us to serve kids and families in new ways—right onsite, along with our programs out in the community. The Planning and Assessment Advisor VISTA will help to develop, review and improve Camp Happy Days’ programs serving children with cancer and their families, specifically new programs to take place in this new space. The VISTA will assist our Programs Director to build, start, run, and assess these new programs.

One of the biggest needs Camp Happy Days has seen among the families we serve has been for more consistent, day-to-day programming and support, especially for those traveling long distances to Charleston for medical care. We are beyond excited for the opportunities that our new office will allow us to provide for families including program space, play areas and a family lounge. The office will provide a functional, flexible, and welcoming space for our families, a respite area, and a comfortable home away from home. With this new space, we will need support in designing and implementing new programs as well as finding ways to utilize the space for existing programs, and support with managing and outfitting the new space. This will be the primary job of the Program Planning and Assessment VISTA.

Over the course of a year, the Program Planning and Assessment VISTA will…

  •  Assist the Programs Director to develop new programs for kids with cancer and their families in Camp Happy Days’ new space. This might include play therapy, art therapy, support groups, game and movie nights, teen groups, and more.
  • Work with the programs staff to review, adapt, and improve our current programs now that we have a new space. This will include our summer camp, Teen Weekends, virtual programs, and more.
  • Organize and assess data collected from previous programs to understand where we currently stand in our impact on children and families facing cancer.
  • Make sure evaluation and feedback methods are in place for all programs, new and old, and that these methods are integrated so that we get a ‘big picture’ of our impact as well as smaller data points.
  • Make recommendations and provide training to staff on possible ways to improve programs based on data and feedback.
  • Help improve Camp Happy Days’ use of technology, including the best use of technology in the new office space and support for offsite programs.
  • Assist with Camp Happy Days programs, events, and projects that engage all staff, including summer camp and major fundraising events.

The Program Planning and Assessment VISTA should…

  • Be committed to the service mission of the Americorps VISTA program, and to Camp Happy Days’ mission to support kids with pediatric cancer.
  • Have demonstrated experience in community service, social service, public health, health care, family support, childcare, or a related field, either through coursework, previous job, volunteering, or internship experience.
  • Be comfortable working with many different people, including children and families, volunteers, community organizations and businesses, other staff, and board members.
  • Be comfortable using basic office technology, including Microsoft Office Suite and email clients. Be comfortable conducting online research.
  • Want to work in a fun, laid-back, but fast-paced environment that requires creativity.
  • Be organized and self-motivated, and willing to take both leadership and team member roles.
  • Represent Camp Happy Days responsibly at all times.
