This presentation explores three cases where gifts became a liability for the organization accepting them. The first case addresses when a gift is not a gift, specifically issues of rights and ownership in gift agreements. The second case dives into donor demands that are inconsistent with the with the mission of the organization and the potential impacts of accommodating them. The third case study deals with ethics. Sometimes it’s better not to accept gifts or donations that compromise principles but refusing them compromises relationships. How does an organization decide what to do? The findings in these three case studies provide guidance on how to develop gift policies in the best interest of donor and the organization, strategies for managing donor demands, the importance of ethics and suggestions for weighing decisions about when to say no.
