Why did you join AFP?
In most of my career I've always had a group I belong to that understand and can give unbiased feedback. Whether it was the Society of Association Executives or Chamber Groups, I've missed that in the development sector. My first job in development burned me out bigtime! The organization didn't create capacity for staff to network with their peers or do professional development. Ultimately, I felt the weight of that. I think it's so crucial for the success of any individual to have their "people".
What is the most exciting thing about the work you do at your current organization?
I love the culture! It is people first and I feel that. I love serving on the Executive team and meeting weekly to talk about how to better our organization. The leadership team is SO GOOD at what they do. The most crazy talented group I've ever been a part of. I love to dream with them and make strategic plans for greater impact!
How did you find your way into fundraising?
I think fundraising is a combination of a lot of different skill sets. I've done jobs that align with that. Event planning, marketing, grant-writing, finance, etc. During COVID a trusted mentor approached me about a job in the development space and thought I had the skillset for it. Turns out that I LOVE. THIS. WORK.
Share a favorite donor impact story:
I once had a donor from another state completely cold call me. I hadn't heard of them at all. It turns out they had a massive family foundation and, from one phone call, gave us a 7 figure gift. It's never that easy!
What is special about the people who give to your organization and/or the people with whom you work?
I love the personal relationships that transcend the organization. People that I've carried relationships with from one organization to the next.
What surprised you most when you joined the profession, or your current organization?
Turnover is pretty high in development! I was shocked. I don't like that aspect because I love permanence and security. I spent 13 years at my first "grown up job". But I also understand what contributes to turnover in Development. It is high pressure at times!
What advice do you have for new professionals joining the community?
Mentors are the best! I owe so much of my career success to amazing mentors!

How do you spend your free time when you’re not working?
OUTSIDE! Hiking, fishing, kayaking!
What is something that few people know about you?
I appear to be an extrovert... but I'm actually very introverted. I enjoy time alone! I don't get much of it because I have 3 very busy kids. But being alone fills my tank! I love to travel alone!
What are your favorite foods?
Anything Asian: Korean, Thai, Laotian, Vietnamese!
Where do you most like (or want!) to travel?
We are camper people. Our little family of 5 takes that thing everywhere! Anywhere there is a mountain and a river, you will find me with the camper! My happy place!
Share a little about your family.
I live on a farm in Mustang with my husband and 3 kids: 11, 9, and 7. We have many farm animals... but I'm closest to my mini goldendoodle Mo. He goes with me everywhere!
