Why did you join AFP?
I joined AFP because I began working in education, where I oversaw a foundation and was responsible for raising money as part of my duties.I thought this would be helpful to connect with others in fundraising.
What is the most exciting thing about the work you do at your current organization?
What I love most is bringing something important back to life. Creative Oklahoma believes creative thinking is an essential skill needed in the workforce. After the organization experienced some time of inactivity, we are creating new programming in a way that delivers on our mission of "cultivating and championing creative thinking in Oklahoma."
How did you find your way into fundraising?
When I began working in CareerTech years ago, I was responsible for managing our foundation that provides scholarships and emergency assistance to students. Joining AFP gave me the opportunity to gain knowledge in areas where I had little prior experience, while also connecting with peers to share challenges, celebrate successes, and learn from one another. I especially value the networking and sense of community that comes from in-person events with our Oklahoma chapter.
Share a favorite donor impact story
I have a few favorites, but my all time favorite was a high school student who became somewhat homeless, no family support, but luckily her school saw that she was in trouble and connected her with a teen home program. This helped her have a place to stay, get a job, but also attend skills training classes to improve her employment opportunities after high school. She changed her focus from automotive to aviation. She received financial support from the foundation that helped her stay on track with her classes. She excelled in her courses. She got a job at a large aircraft maintenance facility and appears to be doing very well years later despite her initial beginnings. I was proud that our foundation could help.
What is special about the people who give to your organization and/or the people with whom you work?
I recently heard someone describe Oklahoma as a ‘connector’ state. People here are always willing to help or link you with others if they don’t have the answer you need. I think that, along with the collaborations that lead to partnerships lifting all of us up, is something truly special.
What advice do you have for new professionals joining the community?
Don't feel like you are in a silo. Attend the monthly AFP meetings, network, meet for coffee, share experiences, challenges or high-fives that you or others can learn from or help with.
How do you spend your free time when you’re not working?
Travel, biking, hiking, movies, coffee, museums, garden and home tours.
Where do you most like (or want!) to travel?
I would love to visit all of the national state parks. I know there are many, but I'd start with Yosemite, Yellowstone, Denali and the Everglades.
