    YVETTE HERRERA NAMED PRESIDENT OF ASSOCIATION OF FUNDRAISING PROFESSIONALS GREATER LOS ANGELES CHAPTER

     

    The Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Los Angeles (AFP GLAC,) is proud to announce that Yvette Herrera of Netzel Grigsby Associates has been named President of this distinguished volunteer organization. Founded in 1968, AFP-GLAC has a legacy of supporting and developing strong philanthropy leaders throughout the area who in turn support a variety of non-profit organizations through fundraising and development. Under Herrera’s leadership, this momentum will continue, with a focus on reaching out to support those who are new to the field of fundraising while continuing to strengthen the education and leadership of experienced professionals.

    “The last two years have challenged and changed the way non-profits operate – especially how we fundraise,” said Yvette. “We should not aim for a return to business as usual. We can and must do better.  Now is the time to develop strategies and take action to bring to the table those who have been missing – as donors, board members and fundraising professionals. Instead of implementing best practices which can often mean repeating what worked in the past, let aspire instead to implement what’s best … for our collective future.”

    We are living in a moment of time where acts of performative allyship are at an all-time high. How do we shut out the noise and focus on the work at hand? How do we come together and begin to dismantle systems that don’t serve us? There are many approaches we can take, but we must start at the beginning and take steps together.

    Join us for a first-ever joint collaboration with our colleagues from AFP-Chicago. This peer-led workshop will be facilitated by IDEA Committee members from each chapter, and will include breakout sessions on three IDEA-related topics:

    o My Experience as a Fundraiser of Color

    o Managing Up: Fundraisers of Color and their Managers

    o Power and Privilege: White Allyship in the Fundraising Space

    On behalf of the AFP-GLAC Committee on Directorship, we are pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2022 AFP Greater Los Angeles Chapter Board of Directors. Serving on the board gives you a special opportunity to work with committed colleagues, and play a key role in advancing our chapter’s strategies for leadership and impact in the philanthropic landscape of Greater Los Angeles. You are invited to nominate a candidate or yourself. 

    Each year during the nomination cycle, our Committee on Directorship seeks to balance the skills and experiences of new directors with those of continuing board members. All returning and new board members are required to complete the application.

    With the changing landscape in our society as we create a more inclusive space, oftentimes there is a struggle with consciously or unconsciously using language or words that are marginalizing or disparaging in nature. Throughout our careers, we have experienced discomfort or vulnerability when we say the wrong thing to a donor, colleague or community partner. These moments spur deep reflection at some point in our career/lives. If there is anything that we’ve learned in nonprofit work as fundraisers, it’s that the right words matter. They help build better relationships and create bridges. They shape how we view the world and how the world views us. So how can words help us to define new ways to engage with one another?

     

    Join AFP-GLAC’s IDEA (Inclusion. Diversity. Equity. Access.) Committee and Marla A. Parker, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Public Administration, Department of Political Science and Co-Founder, Civic and Social Innovation Group at California State University-Los Angeles as she helps us to unpack why words matter more than ever. She’ll lead us on an interactive exploration of the types of language and terminology that encourages a culture of constant learning and growth, which is critical in navigating a landscape where language changes. You’ll be given a blueprint of practical strategies, tools and resources that can ultimately be used as the building blocks towards a more equitable sector and world.

    Marla A. Parker, Ph.D. has nearly 20 years of success in the public and private sectors. In addition, she co-founded the Civic and Social Innovation Group at California State University-Los Angeles, which promotes creative approaches to social change.

  • AFP-GLAC Statement on Boulder, Colorado

    On Monday, March 22 the lives of Eric Talley, Denny Strong, Neven Stanisic, Rikki Olds, Tralona Bartkowiak, Teri Leiker, Suzanne Fountain, Kevin Mahoney, Lynn Murray and Jody Waters were tragically cut short due to gun violence in Boulder, Colorado. Our hearts go out to the families, friends and the community that have been left behind to pick up the pieces. The Association of Fundraising Professionals of Greater Los Angeles (AFP-GLAC) and its members stand with Boulder, Colorado and honor those whose lives were taken much too soon.

    The Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater Los Angeles Chapter (AFP-GLAC) is devastated by the recent and growing attacks on the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities across our nation. As a chapter, as fundraisers, and as community members, we stand by the AAPI communities, as well as our colleagues who identify with these groups. You are not alone.

     

    To our members who identify as AAPI, know that we see you and we hold space for you during this difficult and challenging time. Together, we will be the collective force that works to cast out hate, oppression and injustice of any kind.

  • AFP-GLAC IDEA Program Awarded 2021 IDEA Champion Designation

    Congratulations to our own AFP-GLAC IDEA Committee and all members that have supported in our chapter’s IDEA programs and activities. IDEA is one of our chapter’s strategic priorities and our committee has been at the forefront in advancing it. The programs and activities offered to our chapter over the past year of been enriching, thought provoking, and challenging all of us to be solution oriented active leaders in promoting diversity and inclusion. AFP-GLAC is one of 98 chapters in the nation that was awarded this designation and honor.

    Miguel A. Santana has over 30 years of experience leading numerous fiscal, legislative, political, and community issues. He served as President and C.E.O. of Fairplex since 2016, a nonprofit community benefit regional organization based in Pomona, CA. Previously, Miguel was the City Administrative Officer for the City of Los Angeles, where he oversaw the City’s $9 billion budget and designed the City’s first comprehensive homeless strategy, resulting in a $1.2 billion voter-approved housing bond and a doubling of the City’s general fund investment on programs to end homelessness. Prior to joining the City, Miguel served as one of five Deputy Chief Executive Officers for Los Angeles County, overseeing all social service programs supporting children, families, veterans and persons experiencing homelessness.

    Miguel was appointed President & C.E.O. of the Weingart Foundation in 2021. He engages in numerous civic efforts to create a more equitable Southern California region, including serving as Chair of the Committee for Greater L.A. He also serves on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Whittier College Board of Trustees.

    Miguel has a B.A. in Sociology and Latin American Studies from Whittier College and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.
