Creating a High-Performance Environment for Major Gifts Speakers: Cassie Carter and Dan Nevez of Campbell & Company
In nonprofit fundraising, an effective major gifts program provides a robust return on investment, funding critical, mission-driven work. But how do you create a high-performance environment for major gifts?
Weaving together evidence-based strategies and compelling case studies, this session will lay out a path to major gifts success. Our presenters will reference data from Giving USA and Campbell & Company research to illuminate trends and discuss how development leaders can leverage them for greater impact. Topics will include mid-level donors as a bridge between the annual fund and major gifts, major gift team goals and retention, and the importance of a strong major gift culture organization-wide.
Attendees will leave the session with a better understanding of:
- How emerging trends in fundraising are impacting major gifts—and what to do about it
- How to build a major gifts team
- How to craft and execute on strategies that will increase major gifts ROI

Eye on Ethics |
|

AFP-GLAC’s Eye on Ethics:
Over the next two months, we’ll be featuring a couple of stories regarding sexual harassment in the fundraising profession. Here is one member’s story regarding a donor. Next month, in our monthly newsletter, we’ll feature a story of harassment on one of our members from not only a donor, but someone on their staff. Sexual harassment in the workplace is an important topic to address and we are only briefly skimming the surface with these two stories. At the bottom of this article, you’ll find information on AFP’s 2018 sexual harassment survey, as well as what to do if you feel you’re being sexually harassed at work.
Hands-On Donor
I was 23 years old at the time enjoying our Alumni Reception event. There I met Mr. Wall Street, an older man, married, father of three, and a much-valued donor of the educational institution where I worked. I was new in the Development field. I was excited to be part of this amazing department and eager to learn all I could.
At the event, various alumni were speaking about their careers and their involvement with the educational institution. After I was introduced to Mr. Wall Street, we initially had some small talk. Throughout the evening, he kept approaching me and engaging me in more conversation, trying to get to know me better. We exchanged business cards. I noticed he was overly friendly but did not really think this would lead to anything because he was a married man. Again, I was 23 years old and naïve.
The following Monday, I received an email from Mr. Wall Street indicating he would love to get together. I was a bit unsure if he meant to discuss the educational institution, the possibility of a gift, or something else. As his phone calls and emails continued, I realized he wanted more than just conversation. At one point, he offered to fly me to where he lived, pick me up in a limo and take me shopping at an expensive jewelry store. I thanked him for his offer but declined. That led to another email of him wanting to fly to where I lived and take me out for an evening and stay the night in an expensive hotel.

In 2018, AFP did a survey partnering with the AFP Foundation and Chronicle of Philanthropy on sexual harassment in the workplace. For more information about the survey, please click on the link: https://afpglobal.org/one-quarter-all-female-fundraisers-report-sexual-harassment.
If you are experiencing sexual harassment at your place of work, check and see if your employer has an anti-harassment policy and follow the steps for reporting the harassment. If your employer does not have a policy in place, talk with your supervisor. Further information may be found with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Please let us know if you have an ethical dilemma you’d like to share. Email Melanie Elliott, Ethics Chair at melhelliott@gmail.com the following: 1) The ethical dilemma or situation; 2) How you solved it; and 3) If you would like to remain anonymous. Thank you!
