President’s Message: A Focus on IDEA

Although our chapter has embraced the IDEA Committee for the past 2.5 years, we are now taking steps to carve a robust path forward for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access. IDEA has always had the full support of the board of directors, however, the IDEA Council, (composed of the board executive committee), was recently created to provide essential support, leadership and guidance for IDEA. Chair Lisa Baxter and team have developed a comprehensive plan for 2020 (and beyond) and will soon ask for representatives to serve on the IDEA Committee, with the charge of more tactical, hands-on work. They have provided reading resources found later in this newsletter. For additional resources from Global, click here: https://afpglobal.org/afp-idea-social-justice

I’d like to take this opportunity to reiterate the writing of AFP Global CEO, Mike Geiger…

As fundraisers for nonprofit organizations, we are part of the solution to making the world a better place – by listening, empathizing, inspiring, raising funds and taking action. AFP stands for and fights for the values of inclusion, justice, diversity, fairness, generosity and compassion. Fundraising unites people – there is no place for exclusion, racism and oppression. AFP members raise funds for thousands of different causes, but stamping out institutional racism must be a priority for all. Every donor we inspire, every dollar we raise, every colleague we support, every action we take – is another vital step on the journey to eliminating hatred and racism. Most importantly, regardless of our race, gender, socioeconomic circumstances, sexual preferences, geography or any other applied labels, we must ALL act  and we must all act TOGETHER.

As a chapter and community, we should share a commitment to be more proactive in the quest for solutions and healing.  We should pledge to have the difficult conversations that bring about change. We should rethink and reimagine.  AFP-Greater Los Angeles will be so much Better Together!

Sincerely,

Mauria McPoland, MPA, ABC

Resource List to Prepare for and Pursue Racial Equity

Compiled by the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (I.D.E.A) Committee

What role do we play to improve the social welfare of the communities we serve? And how can we make significant progress towards a more just and equitable society – one where everyone can participate fully and authentically?

As the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (I.D.E.A) Committee of AFP-GLAC, we found it critical to share resources to help you not only facilitate conversations that motivate change, but also present ways to take meaningful action in the pursuit of racial justice.

Click here to download the resource list.

Get Informed

If you’re unsure where to start, education and learning can be a really good first step.

Take Action

Once you’re informed, consider taking action to put your learnings into practice.

  • Don’t underestimate the power of listening! Listen openly and nonjudgmentally to colleagues around you, especially those who may have experienced racial bias, inequity, and discrimination, and are open to talking to you about it:

Get Engaged

To make sustainable change, consider ways to stay engaged in the pursuit of racial equity.

  • Join the IDEA Committee of AFP-GLAC to assist the chapter with initiatives that promote inclusion, diversity, equity and access across the fundraising sector
  • Volunteer and/or donate to organizations who are committed to anti-oppression work
  • Contact your local representatives to share your commitment to racial equity in your community

Take Care

And as you do this work, ensure you are also taking care of yourself throughout this journey.

The pursuit of racial equity is a marathon, which requires us to stretch ourselves outside of our comfort zone and prepare for the long distance ahead. So, remember to be gentle with yourself throughout the process and don’t be afraid to make (and correct!) mistakes. Missteps and mishaps WILL happen along the way – the important thing is to remain committed to doing the work to achieve a more equitable world.

Did we miss something?

The road to achieve true inclusion, diversity, equity and access across our communities is a long one, and is certainly not going to be done alone. So, if you feel there is a resource missing, please email your thoughts and suggestions to Lisa Baxter (lisa_baxter@mlk-chf.org) or Danielle Lara (INFO@DanielleCLara.com) of the AFP-GLAC I.D.E.A Committee

Government Update

government_relations.jpg

AFP Government Relations

AFP Global’s recent and current legislative priorities include:

  • Expansion of the universal charitable deduction
  • Legacy IRA Act
  • Governance issues, such as Johnson Amendment and Form 990 changes
  • Mailing and postage issues, and
  • State bills (including recent focus on those states requiring ethics and other training throughout the state)

We will provide updates on these and other AFP public policy efforts in the coming months.

AFP’s public policy efforts are supported by the AFP Political Action Committee, which is the only political action committee that focuses on fundraising and charitable giving.  The AFP PAC has a bi-partisan and single focus: dedicated exclusively to the protection and advancement of the fundraising profession and philanthropy through the support of Federal candidates.

AFP Political Action Committee leverages AFP’s advocacy efforts through access to decision makers to promote AFP’s public policy priorities.  Examples of successes from these efforts include passage of the IRA Rollover provision and effective opposition to proposals to cap the charitable deduction for major donors.
