President’s Message

Dear AFP-GLAC members and friends,

Your health and well-being are the first priority so we have re-evaluated our position on chapter events and gatherings.  The situation regarding COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, has changed dramatically since my 3/6 communication to everyone. Based on recommendations from the California Health Department and the Governor’s office, in addition to the message conveyed via the conference call I attended with LA County Department of Public Health, we made the decision to postpone the March 12 Young Professional event and the upcoming April 7 Advanced Executive Forum.
Nonetheless, don’t be disappointed - you won’t be void of educational opportunities in April. We are working closely with AFP Global to provide webinar type fundraising sessions and we already have a Membership Webinar scheduled for April 22. We are a sound, ethical fundraising community supporting the missions of Greater Los Angeles nonprofits, no matter how we meet and gather!

We have a new position on the board this year, focusing on our external audience –marketing, public relations and social media. Felicity Palmer is chairing this committee and you will see increased activity on the horizon with our Facebook and LinkedIn accounts as well as other outreach opportunities.

What else is in store for March? Soon you will hear from Ethics Chair, Mike Driebe. Ethics is part of everything we do and is directly responsible for the money we raise and the impact we create. See https://afpglobal.org/ethicsmain/code-ethical-standards  for a refresher.

This year I have the privilege of serving on AFP Global’s Women’s Impact Initiative --- https://afpglobal.org/news/womens-impact-initiative

A key part of the Women’s Impact Initiative was the Women’s Impact Summit,  which followed the AFP LEAD Conference last October in Phoenix. The Summit gathered a plethora of fundraisers to discuss key issues and challenges facing women in the fundraising profession. You can now access some of the recordings from the Summit for a fee. https://www.pathlms.com/afp/courses/14731

Last but not least,  AFP Global’s CEO/President Mike Geiger announced that ICON in Baltimore has been cancelled, however, a virtual component is offered now. Interested? Find out more by logging onto afpicon.com/virtual .

We are experiencing such a challenging time – a time of uncertainty for everyone-- but trust that the AFP-GLAC board of directors is committed to supporting our members. If you have questions or concerns, email us at communications@afpglac.org .

Going forward, as we navigate lifestyle changes and experience possible turbulent weeks ahead, our Mayor, Eric Garcetti succinctly reminds us: “At this time, be good to each other. This is the moment when we can show the best angels in ourselves.”

Sincerely,
Mauria McPoland, MPA, ABC

I.D.E.A. (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) Update

2019AFPFriendsOfDiversityLogo.jpg

We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.”

Max de Pree

With Los Angeles widely recognized as one of the most diverse cities in the country, the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of AFP  celebrates and supports diversity in both fundraising and philanthropic awareness.

The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (I.D.E.A.) Committee helps to drive the chapter’s diversity efforts. We are committed to having the broadest possible representation of individuals, experiences and perspectives with regard to membership, board leadership, program presenters/content, and resources with the ultimate goal of cultivating safe spaces for open and frank discussions on these critical issues.

If you want to make an impact and promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and access through AFP-GLAC and in your own non-profit, join the I.D.E.A. Committee.

We invite you to join us in making a difference! http://bit.ly/IDEAInterestForm

Did You Know Series

did_you_know.png

AFP Did You Know?

As part of our new “Did You Know” series, below are a few more benefits of Global Membership:

  • Do you have no idea what you’re doing and only a shaky idea of where to start? Many of us just “fell” into fundraising and had to be quick on our feet and learn from those around us rather than from classroom lectures and exams. Meeting a mentor to help you learn, grow, and find the resources and education you need to be successful is the most valuable relationship you can form. That’s why we urge all our members to visit the AFP Career Center and sign up to be a mentor or a mentee. https://jobs.afpnet.org/eMentor/
  • We know that *you* understand about ethical behavior in fundraising, but what about some of those others who don’t? AFP is there to help you be knowledgeable about ethics and to hold all our peers to the highest standards in our profession. https://afpglobal.org/ethics

In April, we’ll be sending a membership survey. Please take the time to compete and be candid! Your participation in the survey will help us better serve you.

We are offering prizes for four lucky members who complete the survey–

  • 1 – free admission to a Roundtable
  • 1 – free admission to a Development Seminar/Luncheon
  • 1 – free admission to an Advanced Executive Forum
  • 1 – free admission to our Regional Philanthropy Conference

Questions about membership? Please feel free to reach out to us: Melanie Elliott, VP, Membership – melhelliott@gmail.com or Kristina Lamas, Chair of Member Engagement, klamas@pasadenahumane.org.

National Philanthropy Day Conference

National Philanthropy Day - Celebrating our 35th Anniversary

Friday, November 13, 2020 at the JW Marriott Hotel, Los Angeles, CA

AFP-GLAC is planning a full-day conference with a wonderful Awards Luncheon honoring the people and organizations that dedicate their time, talent and treasure to making the world a better place through philanthropy.

Morning Keynote Speaker

Dr. Kamau Bobb is the Global Lead for Diversity Strategy and Research at Google and the founding Senior Director of the Constellations Center for Equity in Computing at Georgia Tech. He is an engineer and science and technology policy scholar whose work focuses on the STEM enterprise, large educational systems, and the structural conditions that influence contemporary American life.

He brings to his current position a wealth of experience as a former Program Officer at the National Science Foundation (NSF). At NSF he was responsible for $30 million annually of investments targeted on improving computing and STEM education. In that role Dr. Bobb worked to help shape the national research agenda for effective means of delivering equitable and quality computational education to all students. He has worked with members of the Office and Science and Technology Policy in the Obama Administration to set the national strategy for STEM education at both post-secondary and secondary school levels. He was selected as a member of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper STEM + Entrepreneurship Taskforce to help U.S. cities craft strategies to engage young men and boys of color in the STEM landscape. Prior to his federal appointment, Dr. Bobb was the Director of the STEM Initiative for the University System of Georgia, a collaborative effort with the governor’s office to improve STEM education across the 30 public institutions serving approximately 325,000 students in the state.

ACTION CALL:  We need volunteers/members to join our planning committee. This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in gaining fundraising event planning experience and wants to build a supportive professional network along the way.  If you are interested in joining our committee or would like to submit an RFP to present at our conference, please contact us!  Click here for a list of volunteer opportunities.
