This month, meet Miren Luczka, AFP Saskatoon Chapter Ethics Chair, and Development Officer, College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan
How long have you been in fundraising & how did you discover the fundraising world?
I’ve been working in development at the University of Saskatchewan for nearly seven years. Like many of my peers, I didn’t originally set out to become a fundraiser. I was first introduced to fundraising while working in the community investment portfolio at the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, where I met with many development professionals seeking support for their organizations.
What really drew me in was the passion fundraisers had for their causes, it was inspiring and contagious. I remember thinking it was only a matter of time before I would be sitting on the other side of the table, doing the asking rather than the giving. While I continue to support organizations close to my heart in different ways, I now have the privilege of working with donors who care deeply about higher education and about the next generation of nurses.
What is something you love about being a fundraiser?
I love being a connector and a bit of a philanthropic match‑maker, helping align people with causes and opportunities that are the right fit and that lead to meaningful, lasting impact for both the donor and the organization.
Why are you involved with AFP?
I first got involved with AFP Saskatoon as a volunteer with its signature event, National Philanthropy Day Luncheon. What began as a small volunteer role grew into greater responsibilities, and I’ve had the privilege of co‑chairing the event for the past three years. Along the way, I’ve valued connecting with fellow fundraisers and giving back to the profession that has given me so many opportunities.
As fundraisers, we often talk about donors giving out reciprocity, and my involvement with AFP Saskatoon feels the same. It’s my way of contributing to a profession that has shaped and continues to inspire my career.
What causes are special to you?
I’m drawn to causes that support education, strengthen communities, and make a positive difference, especially those that connect people with opportunities to create meaningful, lasting impact.
