This month, meet Jill Gales, AFP Saskatoon Chapter Awards Chair, and Development Officer, Saskatchewan Polytechnic
How long have you been in fundraising & how did you discover the fundraising world?
I’ve been working in fundraising at Saskatchewan Polytechnic since 2020. Before that, my career experience included personal finance and hospitality, two fields that taught me the value of building strong, authentic relationships. That experience has been a great foundation for fundraising, and I truly enjoy connecting with people and helping make a positive impact. With many educators in my family, including my mom, I’ve always believed in the power of education. When the opportunity to join Sask Polytech came along, it felt like a natural fit.
What is something you love about being a fundraiser?
I love connecting with people and learning the stories behind why they choose to give—there’s often a deeply personal reason that inspires their generosity. Working with corporations and foundations adds another layer of impact, and being part of that journey, knowing you’ve helped facilitate meaningful partnerships that benefit students and programs, is incredibly rewarding. Seeing firsthand the difference those gifts make is what makes fundraising so fulfilling for me.
Why are you involved with AFP?
Because I started my fundraising career in 2020, all my onboarding was remote and there were very few chances to connect with others in person. I felt as though this left a gap in my experience so after returning from maternity leave in late 2023, I was eager to build real connections with other peers in the profession. My manager encouraged me to become more involved with AFP, and the rest is history! I love connecting with fellow fundraisers, sharing experiences, and supporting and learning from one another. I also appreciate the professional development opportunities AFP offers, which allow us to develop our skills and stay at the forefront of best practices in fundraising.
What causes are special to you?
Education has always been close to my heart—I believe in its power to transform lives, and with many educators in my family, it’s a cause that feels personal. Advancing healthcare and humanitarian efforts are also important to me. In addition, I’m interested in finding small, meaningful ways to involve my young kids in giving back. I often share with them that there are generous people who want to make life better for others, and that we are privileged to do the same in our own small ways. These causes inspire me every day to do work that truly makes a difference.
