Member since 2019

Why did you join AFP?

When I changed careers in 2019 I learned about AFP from a colleague. I attended a luncheon and knew quickly it was going to be an excellent resource for me. I value the networking, education, and many friendships I've made through my membership.

What is the most exciting thing about the work you do at your current organization?

In my role at the Regional Food Bank I get to connect people with meaningful and impactful giving opportunities. I love working with companies that give monetarily and also participate in volunteer service, because including the service element gives their employees a greater understanding of the work being done, and a feeling of hope as they see first-hand how much we can accomplish.

How did you find your way into fundraising?

After 17 years as a public-school music educator, I needed a life change. I had the opportunity to join a friend working in development at an arts nonprofit, and it was the perfect transition into a new career.

What surprised you most when you joined the profession, or your current organization?

When I came to the Regional Food Bank, I was shocked to learn just how much food is being distributed through our network. 59 million pounds last year! That is a hard number to conceptualize; learning about the variety of programs we have and the impressive number of partners we work with helps bring it into focus.

What advice do you have for new professionals joining the community?

Find a mentor and ask a lot of questions. Focus on relationships and be kind.

What is something that few people know about you?

I can recite the alphabet backwards. Weird, but true.

Where do you most like (or want!) to travel?

I love New York and the variety of arts and culture found there. If I ever win the lottery, I'm buying an apartment in the West Village!

Share a little about your pets, family, or friends.

I have a son in college and a daughter in high school. They're both way cooler than I'll ever be!
