Overview:

“Brand” and “Storytelling” can feel ambiguous and even confusing. What is my non-profit’s story and how do I tell it? Good news – there are experts who have already researched these very questions and they are ready to share with you what works, what doesn’t, and how even the smallest organization can both assess their identity and communicate it effectively to your community! Join us for a panel discussion with ODU’s School of Public Service faculty who will share their research, findings, and – most importantly - the practical steps you can take as a fundraiser and non-profit leader to advance your organization’s narrative.

Panelists:

Dr. Adam Eckerd is an Associate Professor with the School of Public Service at Old Dominion University. He conducts research on organizational and individual decision making in complex settings, particularly as it relates to how risk is assessed and how information is used to manage public and nonprofit programs and policies. Adam’s work investigates issues of environmental policy and land use, public participation, and program evaluation. Dr. Eckerd holds a PhD in Public Policy and Management from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Bruce McDonald received a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy from Florida State University, an M.Sc. in Economic History from the London School of Economics, UK, and a B.A. in Communications from Mercer University. Previously he was a Professor of Public Budgeting and Finance in the Department of Public Administration at North Carolina State University and a Fellow at the International Centre of Public Accountability at Durham University.

Dr. Kirk Leach holds a PhD in Public Administration from Rutgers University and is an Assistant Professor of Public Service at ODU. He researches nonprofit innovation, community development, public private partnerships, and social entrepreneurship.

Moderator:

Kate Powell, MPA, CFRE, currently chairs Old Dominion University’s MPA Advisory Board, serving the School of Public Service. She has a passion for leveraging research and evidence-based ideas to spur practical action for non-profit professionals and enjoys this intersection in her own work as Executive Director of Tidewater Arts Outreach – an arts and human services hybrid organization.
