AFP Central Virginia: Your Local Chapter
The Association of Fundraising Professionals Central Virginia Chapter is a group of over 100 people that represent all facets of our fundraising community. Our membership contains a diverse mix of career levels and areas of expertise. We all share a desire to improve our shared profession by supporting and empowering each other. We do this through numerous programs (link to programs) and events (link to calendar) throughout the year that offer the opportunity for learning, sharing, mentoring, and collaboration.
Our Chapter is a hub for discussing relevant and timely philanthropic topics. Each month, we come together for a membership meeting focused on a specific topic or skill where a knowledgeable leader in the field leads a discussion that includes application of this skill in real world situations. These topics range from ethical fundraising practices, to how to implement a community-centered fundraising model, to how to build meaningful relationships with donors and funders. Monthly meetings are one hour, with an optional talk-back session immediately following the workshop.
Diverse voices are vital to the continued growth and strength of our Chapter. We recently completed a DEI Assessment where we learned that members are seeking more opportunities for open discussion and collaboration. As a result, we are focused on creating inclusive monthly meetings that provide a safe and brave environment where members can share experiences, learn from one another, and grow together.

Although I was introduced to AFP Central VA several years ago, I didn’t join the chapter until I received a complimentary membership through the Inclusive Fundraising Fellowship (IFF). At the time, I was a Development Coordinator looking to find my voice and place in philanthropy as a young, Black woman who had experienced harm in the profession. I gained so much insight and confidence in my abilities through IFF and its facilitators at the time (Nicole Jones and Nadia Gooray), that I decided to not only remain an AFP member after IFF ended, but also serve on AFP’s board and IFF planning committee.
