How did the Frank V. Whitley Lecture Series Begin?
The Frank V. Whitley Lecture Series is AFP-NJ’s premier educational workshop; this series of annual lectures is a tribute to the chapter’s first president, Frank V. Whitley, and commemorates his strong commitment to providing New Jersey’s fundraisers with high quality, timely, and very relevant educational information. This annual event is dedicated to in-depth exploration of a significant fundraising topic, emerging trends in development, or innovative fundraising practices and techniques. Historically the Whitley Lecture has appealed to all levels of development professionals, as well as consultants who serve the development industry.
Frank Whitley was born in The Bronx, and raised in Scarsdale, NY. At 17 he enlisted in the Army, serving a tour in Korea. Frank attended Kent State and Iowa State Universities, earning a Masters’ Degree. After college, he worked as an on-air radio journalist and news copywriter. Several years later he changed careers and began fundraising for the American Heart Association in Omaha, NE. His long and distinguished fundraising career continued until several months prior to his passing on June 15, 2006. Notable accomplishments included raising funds for the construction of the Newark campus of CMDNJ, as well as campaigns for the Leukemia Society, YWCA, and Multiple Sclerosis. He was also a founder and past president of the NJ Society of Fundraisers, which is now known as the Association of Fundraising Professionals - New Jersey Chapter.
