Program Title:
Using Meaningful Data to Generate Dollars
National statistics are interesting but sharing what they mean at a local level is powerful in crafting effective programs and funding proposals. There are many datasets out there that can help you tell your nonprofit’s “why” and assist in contextualizing your work. Whether you work in education, healthcare, social services, food insecurity, animal rescue, or anything else, local data can help you create a compelling case for support and needs statement.
In addition, fundraising professionals collect lots of data on their donors, but how do you use this data to increase funding? Fundraising professionals can track several key performance indicators, but they are not meaningful unless used to generate additional fundraising strategies.
Dr. Colton Strawser will present his formula for writing compelling need statements and cases for support utilizing four different types of needs. Examples of how to incorporate community and donor data into actionable fundraising methods will be shared to highlight how data can be a useful tool to generate and cultivate additional philanthropic contributions.

Colton Strawser, Ph.D.
Dr. Colton Strawser is a nonprofit and philanthropic consultant and the President of Colton Strawser Consulting—a consulting firm that works with mission-driven organizations to develop the data, funding, and leadership skills necessary to create change. Colton has trained over 1,000 organizations, generated over $25 million in government grants, and supported local and national research efforts to understand social issues and community challenges better.
Colton received his PhD in Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership from the University of San Diego, is a Certified Fund Raising Executive, and an AFP Master Trainer. He is also an adjunct professor at Louisiana State University-Shreveport where he teaches courses in fundraising and nonprofit governance in the nonprofit master’s program.
His latest research project is the 2023 Compensation and Benefits Study for AFP Global in collaboration with Melissa Brown.
