Why did you join AFP Nova Scotia? What has your experience been like so far?
I joined AFP Nova Scotia as a young professional who had recently transitioned into a career in philanthropy. I have found the Nova Scotia chapter to be an incredibly valuable resource for professional development, through training and educational resources, like the Fundamentals of Fundraising course. Networking opportunities have allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about working hard to create lasting, positive impact in their community.
Tell us about your current role at the YMCA. What is your favorite part of the job?
In my current role as Community Campaign Coordinator at the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth, I am responsible for providing support to the capital campaign for the new John W. Lindsay YMCA opening in Spring 2020. As a member of the development staff, my duties include gift processing and reporting, research, data management, solicitation and stewardship.
My favourite part of my job is working with our team of dedicated volunteers and learning about people’s experiences with the YMCA. Almost everyone has a Y story and hearing how the YMCA, through our many programs (health and wellness, employment, settlement, leadership and community development) has helped folks from a variety of different backgrounds always brightens my day!
What's the best advice that you have ever received?
One of the best pieces of professional advice I have received was given to me recently by a member of our senior leadership team. She encouraged me not to hold back, to speak up and share my ideas. I believe the most important asset of an organization is its people. Learning from our collective experiences and perspectives, and participating in meaningful conversation, is essential to our organizational health and shared success.
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I am most proud of the relationships I have been able to build with colleagues, stakeholders, community members and partners. The YMCA is committed to building healthy communities and ensuring a strong sense of belonging for everyone. I look forward to the opportunity to make a difference in my community through these connections every day.
What’s your favorite thing to do in Nova Scotia in the fall?
I am so grateful to live in such a beautiful province as Nova Scotia. We have an incredibly rich history and some of the most scenic natural landscapes in the country. My favourite Fall activities are hiking along coastal trails, taking in the stunning scenery with friends, and experiencing art and music of the many cultures of Kjipuktuk (Halifax).
