Why did you join AFP Nova Scotia? What has your experience been like so far?
When I first entered the world of fundraising, my director at the time suggested I take the Fundamentals of Fundraising course through my local AFP chapter in Ontario. This course gave me the opportunity to not only learn about the field and best practices, but also to connect with fellow peers in the sector. My experience with AFP in Ontario kick-started my learning so when I recently moved to Halifax, I knew I just had to join to connect with the incredible community here in Nova Scotia.
As a young professional, I’m always looking for ways to expand my network and get involved. AFP Nova Scotia has been a great resource in helping me achieve just that!
Tell us about your current role at Ronald McDonald House Charities Atlantic. What is your favourite part of the job?
As the Senior Development Officer at Ronald McDonald House Charities Atlantic, I’m responsible for our event sponsorships, community fundraising and McHappy Day. My favourite part of the job is connecting with Maritimers and hearing how Ronald McDonald House has supported their families and friends. Since the House serves families from all over Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI, work has been a great way to explore this new part of Canada that I now call home.
What inspired you to pursue a career in fundraising?
I fell into fundraising by mistake, initially wanting to explore the communications field but in a small shop. It didn’t take me long to realize what an inspiring field fundraising is, full of passionate people wanting to make a difference in the community.
What’s the best advice that you have ever received?
Push yourself outside your comfort zone at least once a week. As a young professional, this advice has opened up new opportunities for me.
What’s your favourite thing to do in Nova Scotia in the Winter?
Explore! The sights around Nova Scotia are just as beautiful in the winter as they are in the summer.
