2021 August - Newsletter

August 2021

Dear Fellow AFP Members and Not-for-Profit Colleagues,

Blessed… is how I feel as I look out the window as I write this little note. I love living in the Maritimes in the summer. I was thrilled to visit New Brunswick twice, Prince Edward Island once, and packing the car for a few road trips, glorious!

I hope you have found a way to take some time off and relax this summer. I took the month of July off and returned to work happier than I have been in a very long time. While travelling around the Maritimes I also studied for, and passed, the Master Financial Advisor – Philanthropy designation. I learned so much about how Financial Advisors think and now have the insider’s playbook on how to speak to them about how they can help and encourage their clients on their road to philanthropy. So cool! I know studying may not be everyone’s idea of fun for their vacation; however, I hope that you found something that “fills you up” this summer.

September is fast approaching (like you need a reminder) and our AFP Nova Scotia Board will have its first fall meeting. In the last newsletter, I asked if you might consider joining the Board. Volunteers are always welcomed and please make contact if you think this is something that might interest you: alumni@kes.ns.ca. Also, our chapter is offering a free AFP membership. This scholarship is open to applicants who are new or renewing AFP members and who self-identify as a member of an equity-seeking group. Please pass this message to anyone you think may wish to apply. Application details can be found below in the message from our IDEA Committee.

Have a great finish to August,

Heather Strickey

President, AFP Nova Scotia

The AFP Nova Scotia Chapter is committed to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (I.D.E.A.) in all chapter activities.

AFP Nova Scotia membership goes well beyond the Halifax area. In fact, 25% of our membership is outside the greater Halifax region, including seven members in neighbouring Prince Edward Island! As part of our Chapter’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) strategic initiative, we are ensuring all AFP-NS members are able to participate in Chapter activities through virtual access such as the Young Professionals Socials, Maritime Fundraising Conference, Monthly Workshops, and AFP Industry Professional Awards & Annual General Meeting. If you are experiencing a challenge in realizing the full potential to participate as a Member, please let us know.

Participation Opportunity! The IDEA Committee is seeking members to serve on the committee to advocate for practices that assure inclusion in our membership, leadership, and services that help to identify and meet the needs of our diverse membership, and foster a culture of diversity and inclusion in the AFP-NS Chapter. You do not have to be a Member of AFP to join a sub-committee. If you would like to learn about the role of an IDEA committee member, please send your expression of interest to our Chapter Administrator
