How did you start your career in philanthropy?

My journey into the non-profit world was a bit different than most. I went to school for marketing, was working for a couple malls in Edmonton, in the marketing department, when I experienced a bit of a life altering experience. I found myself recovering at home, and with limited mobility I spent a lot of time looking through the daily newspaper (no really – a printed newspaper). While doing that I found myself considering my return to the workforce, what my options could be, and saw that the Alberta SPCA was looking for a fundraising manager. That was it for me because I could use my marketing skills, my public speaking skills, my sales and my love to connect with people. Not to mention I loved the idea of raising money to support a mission, to fund programs and services, in this case, the health and wellbeing of animals. Throughout my tenure, in additional to animal welfare, I have supported charities in health, social services, the environment and education. And really, I have never looked back.

Why did you join AFP Nova Scotia?

Back in Edmonton I had been a member of a group called the Alberta Association of Fund Raising Professionals (AAFRE). It was actually the first professional association and provided seed money to AFP Edmonton. Back then the two organizations were very different but as we started to provided the same services the board made the decision to amalgamate the two and use AAFRE reserve to sponsor any members interested in becoming and AFP member, as well as provide scholarships for grassroots and new fundraisers. I moved to AFP Edmonton and became a part of the board, co-chairing their annual National Philanthropy Day Awards and Celebration lunch. So it just made sense to maintain my membership and was honoured when I was asked to join the Maritime Fundraising Conference Mar/Comms Committee and then the board.

What would you share with someone who is unsure about joining AFP?

If you aren’t sure about joining AFP my advice would be – attend some of our educational sessions, come out to events and get to know us. It’s a great group of people and we really are here to help one another. And if you are new to fundraising – this is a great way to find a mentor, to strengthen your skills and learn more about this incredible community.

What would you tell fundraisers who are just getting started or looking to grow?

I think it’s all about getting out there and doing as much as you feel comfortable doing. That’s not necessarily filling your dance card because you still need to look after yourself but consider attending various mixers hosted by different groups, attend conferences, workshops, presentations and find a mentor. And while you’re doing that ask questions, ask for help, and trust that you were hired because the charity you work with believes in you.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

It’s May and I wouldn’t consider myself a good mom if I didn’t say my child. Now, if you are suggesting that doesn’t have anything to do with my career let me share a little more. I have never shied away from letting my child know where I was working, what the mission is and who and how I’m helping. And because of that they have stickered condoms for HIV Edmonton, helped run booths at the Canadian Liver Foundation, volunteered to help with the reception at the Alberta Emerald Foundation and Brunswick Street Mission. And currently, help the program team at JA Nova Scotia package educational material to be shipped to teachers. And if that wasn’t enough, they were recognized as a Great Kid in the Province of Alberta for their work to collect toys at their school after Katrina and was one of the inaugural groups to receive a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for their charitable work, including starting their own charity of collecting crayons from Boston Pizza’s, melting them down and creating larger 3 sided crayons for children with mobility issues.

Tell us about your role with the Marketing/Communications Portfolio.

I think the Mar/Comms portfolio is a really fun portfolio to be a part of because I get to work with all the board members and each and every committee. The best part is I get to share the amazing work that everyone is doing for our members through our social channels and through our newsletter and website.
