Symposium 2021

AFP SYMPOSIUM 2021

A collaboration of AFP San Fernando Valley, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties

Finding time to re-energize as fundraising professionals is an often overlooked but powerful factor that impacts the way we go about our daily work. It also impacts the way we do our jobs as fundraisers.

The aim of this year’s symposium is to create a space for us to ENGAGE with fellow fundraisers and to learn from experts in their fields, to EMPOWER us to get creative with our storytelling and fundraise from a more inspired place and to ELEVATE our spirits as we emerge into a new era of nonprofit management, fundraising and leadership.

It will include topics for your personal and professional development as well as provide you with tangible techniques that you can put into practice immediately. Whether you are a development shop of one or one hundred, this year’s AFP Symposium is exactly what you need to kickstart your fiscal year and ELEVATE your fundraising and nonprofit leadership to a whole new level.

What is Your Pandemic Story? with Doug Green

Lion, king of beasts, takes two steps back and gathers himself to spring. (Japanese proverb)

Stories make sense of the past and create the future.  There is the experience of challenge and then there is the story we tell about it.  Participants will leave this session with a surge of positive energy and a freshly framed story of pandemic as powerful personal crucible.

    1. How has the past year changed you?
    2. How has it changed your relationships with your donors?
    3. How has it shaped your view of what’s possible for you and your organization?

What story will you tell?

The quality of your presence is something you bring to every interaction.  Are you fully present, or only partly there?  Is your attention distracted?  Do you find you are always multitasking or thinking about other things rather than the present moment?  What does your partial attention communicate to other people, and how does it impact you?  We live in a world filled with distractions, over-stimulation and busy-ness.  In this session, we’ll explore what helps us bring our best self to work and life, and what gets in the way.  We’ll also discuss ways we can cultivate the quality of our own presence.
