Board Member Spotlight

David Lee
AFPNEO 2024 Co-Chair, National Philanthropy Day
Director of Development, National First Ladies Library & Museum

What made you decide to join AFPNEO? I decided to join AFPNEO because I wanted to take my career in fundraising to the next level and learn from some of the best professionals in the field right here in Northeast Ohio. The opportunity to access their expertise, insights, and experiences is invaluable for my professional growth and development. Additionally, I saw AFPNEO as a platform to build relationships with other individuals passionate about fundraising. Networking with like-minded peers not only expands my knowledge base but also opens doors to collaboration and support within the fundraising community. Joining AFPNEO was a natural step towards advancing my career and connecting with others who share my dedication to making a difference through fundraising efforts.

Favorite part of working in fundraising? My favorite part of working in fundraising is the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share a passion for a common vision and mission. There's a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose that arises when working together towards a meaningful goal. Additionally, I enjoy the aspect of building and nurturing relationships within the community, whether it's with donors, volunteers, or beneficiaries. These connections not only strengthen the organization's support base but also contribute to the creation of a vibrant and engaged community dedicated to making a positive impact.

Favorite experience with AFPNEO so far? My favorite experience with AFPNEO so far has been my involvement in the committee for National Philanthropy Day (NPD). Being part of NPD provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the profound impact of giving and the countless contributions individuals and organizations make to support various causes and missions worldwide. NPD is a celebration of generosity and gratitude, honoring those who have made significant contributions to our community.

What truly makes this experience special is the incredible team I have the privilege to work with on this project. Collaborating with dedicated and passionate individuals who share a common goal of recognizing and celebrating the philanthropic spirit within our community has been immensely rewarding. Together, we work tirelessly to honor and celebrate those who have supported our community in meaningful and impactful ways. It's inspiring to see how a group of like-minded individuals can come together to make a difference and highlight the importance of giving back.

If you could give your younger self any advice about the fundraising profession, what would it be? If I could give my younger self advice about the fundraising profession, it would be to focus on building strong relationships and cultivating genuine connections with donors, volunteers, and stakeholders. While fundraising involves meeting financial targets and achieving goals, the heart of it lies in the relationships we nurture. I would also remind my younger self to remain resilient and adaptable in the face of challenges. Fundraising can be unpredictable, with highs and lows, but perseverance and a positive mindset are key to overcoming obstacles and achieving long-term success in this rewarding profession.

What are your hobbies outside of work and fundraising? Outside of work and fundraising, I am deeply passionate about the performing arts, particularly theatre. Whether it's attending live performances, participating in community productions, or even engaging in behind-the-scenes work, theatre holds a special place in my heart. The magic of storytelling, the creativity of staging, and the energy of live performances never fail to inspire and captivate me.

In addition to theatre, I have a keen interest in interior and graphic design. Exploring different design styles, experimenting with colors and textures, and creating aesthetically pleasing spaces or visuals bring me immense joy. Whether it's redesigning a room in my home, brainstorming concepts for graphic projects, or simply appreciating innovative design in various forms, I find fulfillment in the creative process and the ability to transform ideas into tangible expressions of artistry.

Marion Drake
AFPNEO VP of Professional Development and President Elect
Director of Advancement, Walsh Jesuit High School

What made you decide to join AFPNEO?  Over the last few years, AFPNEO has been beneficial for my continuing education and helped me grow my professional network. Once I started to work on my CFRE, I felt it was essential to become more involved and that committee work could only increase my knowledge and skills that would translate into my non-profit work. My work on the Professional Development Committee has helped expand my industry knowledge, allows me to collaborate and learn from my peers, and has allowed me to pay it forward in a sense. As a board member, I can contribute in a greater way and sharpen my leadership skills by heading a committee.

Favorite part of working in fundraising? No other industry allows you to create meaningful relationships with philanthropists and change-makers and be a part of their impact on the community. To see that impact firsthand through the lens of our clients is immeasurable.

Favorite experience with AFPNEO so far? My favorite experience with AFPNEO has been working with such an engaged committee and strengthening my connections with others in the industry.

If you could give your younger self any advice about the fundraising profession, what would it be? Be bold and confident in your organization's mission, and not be afraid to ask a donor to be a part of that mission. Once I learned that sometimes a donor is just waiting for someone to ask, I now worry that I would insult someone if I didn't.

What are your hobbies outside of work and fundraising? My husband and I love to travel and visit new places. I also enjoy cooking and entertaining.
